Researchers Kevin Karsch, Varsha Hedau, David Forsyth & Derek Hoiem have come up with a way to insert synthetic objects into ordinary still photographs. Their SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Paper 'Rendering Synthetic Objects into Legacy Photographs' looks into different aspects which influence the appearance of an object in a real world scene and the methods to artificially reproduce them on a synthetic object. Factors influencing the process are the physical model of the scene, light sources, illumination models, properties of the object to be rendered, etc. Based on the data collected with the help of user annotation regarding the physical scene, the foreign object is rendered into the photo by using LuxRender.
